The Problem

The Goal

Busy and long-distance relatives miss their
loved-ones.
Design an app for Blooms that allows users to
easily order flowers for their loved-ones and
express their love..

My Role

Responsibilities

UX designer designing an app for Blooms
Flower App from conception to delivery.
Conducting interviews, paper and digital
wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping,
conducting usability studies, accounting for
accessibility, and iterating on designs.

User Research: Summary

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and
their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to
buy flowers themselves or they have loved-ones staying away
where they can’t personally be present to gift flowers.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Blooms’ customers, but research
also revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from buying flowers from the local shops.
Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it
difficult to get flowers in-person.

User Research: Pain Points

1

2

Time
Long - Distance
Working adults are too busy to spend time on buying flowers themselves from a local shop
Local florists don’t deliver flowers abroad

3

4

Lack Of Options
Payment
Lack of customization options in the existing flower apps
Lack of easy payment options

Persona: Aman

Problem statement:
Aman is a working adult who needs options to send flowers to his long-distance girlfriend staying in Australia because he is missing her and wants to express his love..

User Journey Map

Mapping Aman’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be for users to have access to a dedicated Blooms flower app.

Paper Wireframes

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Digital Wireframes

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research. People wanted to have an option to customise their flowers so added the customisation option in the second screen.

These flower
options gives the
users access to
pre-made flowers.

Low - Fidelity Prototype

Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was building and ordering a flower arrangement, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.

Usability Study - Findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the
designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and
revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
Round 1 Findings

1

Users want to order flowers quickly

2

Users want more customization options

3

Users want various payment options
Round 2 Findings

1

Shipping charges added at the end is frustrating

2

“Build your own” functionality is confusing

3

Home screen looks cluttered

Mockups

Early designs allowed for customisation, but after the usability studies, I removed the confusing options . I revised the design so users see a single button to build their own flowers when they first land on the screen.

High - Fidelity Prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for building flowers and checkout.

Takeaways

While designing the Blooms Flower App, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.
